A native of Waterloo, Mike Young joined DBSH in 2004 after practicing law for several years in Chicago, Illinois. Mike, a Partner in the firm, concentrates his practice primarily in Business Law and Real Estate. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Texas Christian University in 1998, majoring in Finance, and received his law degree in 2001 from the University of Iowa College of Law.
Mike is licensed to practice law in Iowa and Illinois. He has been a member of the American, Iowa, Illinois and Black Hawk County bar associations and has been involved with the Business Law sections of the ABA and ISBA.
Mike's practice consists of representation of numerous businesses and entities with operations in Iowa and Illinois, from privately-held companies to publicly-traded corporations to government and non-profit entities. Clients include manufacturers, distributors, real estate developers, financial institutions, health care providers, dealerships, service providers, and educational and governmental institutions. Mike provides transactional, contractual, regulatory and operational counsel to his clients. Since 2009, he has served as lead counsel for 24 multi-million dollar business acquisitions and sales, ranging in price from $1.1 Million to over $25 Million.
In 2007, Mike was elected to the Board of Education of the 11,000-student Waterloo Community School District. Three years into his first term, Mike was elected by his fellow board members as President and was unanimously re-elected as President each year thereafter until retiring from the school board in 2015. He also served on the City of Waterloo Planning, Programing & Zoning Commission between 2008 and 2015.
Mike is an active member of his church and has volunteered with numerous civic and philanthropic community organizations. He was a founder and board member of the Waterloo Schools Foundation and a founder and the first President of the Waterloo Community Foundation. Mike also is a Trustee of the R.J. McElroy Trust and Director of the Young Family Foundation. Mike was honored in 2007 as a recipient of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier's "Twenty Under Forty"award, which recognizes up-and-coming business and community leaders in the Cedar Valley.
Mike and his wife, Dodie, have three sons.
